Project Description

Thomas Stroud

2025 University of Iowa Scholarship Recipient

Tommy Stroud is a senior from West Des Moines, Iowa, studying Finance and Risk Management & Insurance at the University of Iowa. Growing up in the Des Moines metro, he had the privilege of being immersed in the insurance industry at an early age. He interned at Farm Bureau Financial Services on the P&C Express Claims team the summer before beginning college, which sparked his interest in the industry and prompted him to declare a major in insurance. He returned to Farm Bureau the following summer as a Lead P&C Claims Intern, helping train the new 10 interns, coordinate inspections for storm-related auto claim efforts, and screen thousands of claims payments to identify lien holder data trends relevant to the launch of a new digital claims payment system. He also participated in the inaugural Insure Your Future program during his second summer at Farm Bureau, allowing him to see the breadth of opportunity in the industry. Recently, Tommy has also interned at AAVIN Equity Advisors, a lower middle market private equity firm in Cedar Rapids, and BMO Capital Markets on their Industrials Investment Banking team in Chicago.

As a senior on campus, Tommy is passionate about staying involved in his student organizations and connecting other students with early-stage insurance internships. While serving as President of his business fraternity, Delta Sigma Pi, he connected younger students with internships in the Insure Your Future program and mentored students pursuing similar opportunities. Outside of Delta Sigma Pi, Tommy serves on the Judicial Board for the Tippie College of Business, gives tours of the business school to prospective students and families, and works part-time for the Vaughan Institute of Risk Management and Insurance. When he graduates, Tommy will return full-time to BMO Capital Markets as an Investment Banking Analyst in their New York City office. He plans to return to the financial services industry in Des Moines later in his career to be near family and contribute to an industry he is passionate about. He is very grateful to the Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame and all the donors who have made this award possible and continue to invest in students like him.
