Steve Morain served 25 years as Senior Vice President/General Counsel with Farm Bureau Financial Services and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation, guiding the insurance group’s growth from a small three state regional company to a group with national reach and billions of assets offering agricultural, property, casualty, crop, life, annuity and investment products before his retirement in 2008. After his retirement from Farm Bureau, he served for nine years as Executive Director/General Counsel of the Iowa Insurance Institute, representing the property/casualty industry. He also served on the steering committee of the International Insurance Symposium in Des Moines. and several terms on the Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame board and functioned as its President on two separate occasions.

He is a member of the Rotary Club of Des Moines, and assisted his wife when she served as Rotary District Governor throughout Iowa.

Despite his business and civic involvement, he found time to coach youth soccer for 14 straight years while his children were growing, as well as volunteering at horse shows, dance recitals, roller hockey tournaments, and school events.

He also found time to sing for over 25 years with the Choir of St. Paul’s Cathedral, was a long time member of Des Moines Concert Singers, and sang onstage with the Des Moines Metro Opera. His extended family and a few of their friends performed Handel’s Messiah in the family home for nearly 50 years at Christmas.

Morain is married to his wife, Erna, a Dutch native now an American citizen, and they share five successful adult children.

He was born in Jefferson and graduated from high school there, received his BA and JD degrees from the University of Iowa, and began his law practice with the Davis Law Firm in Des Moines after service in the US Air Force. He returned to the Davis Firm after retiring from Farm Bureau.

Both during and after his tenure with Farm Bureau, Morain was heavily involved in venture capital, economic development and state/private partner activities. He served on the boards of several public/private corporations created by the Iowa Legislature to foster economic growth.
