Project Description

Jim Willis

2025

Jim Willis began his career in sales in 1994 after graduating from Coe College, and quickly became known for his energy, optimism, and relentless drive to serve others. After early success in the telecommunications industry, he transitioned into insurance in 2001, joining Walston, Davis, Byl Insurance in Waverly, Iowa. There, he discovered a passion for employee benefits and health insurance, eventually growing his book of business into a million-dollar portfolio through his commitment to client service and innovation.

As the agency evolved into The Accel Group, Willis led the employee benefits division and helped develop an online benefits enrollment system to streamline client services. In 2015, he founded Community Insurance Partners/Willis Benefits, focusing on underserved individuals in small Iowa towns. His vision expanded further in 2018 when he helped unite several agencies under the Group Benefit Partners name, creating a collaborative network across five cities in Eastern Iowa.

Willis was a tireless innovator and advocate for his clients. Even after being diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2019, he continued working through treatments, participating in clinical trials, and strategizing for his clients’ futures. His resilience and determination inspired all who knew him.

A graduate of Camanche High School and Coe College, Willis was a multi-sport athlete and NCAA tennis qualifier. He brought the same competitive spirit and tenacity to his professional life. He was a two-time recipient of the Wellmark Promise Award and was named the top small group agent for CoOpportunity Health in 2014. He also served on the Group Benefits Limited (GBL) agent advisory board and was a frequent speaker and panelist at industry events.

Willis was deeply involved in his community, serving as Chairman of the Waverly Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Waverly Economic Development Commission, and head coach of the Wartburg College tennis teams. He also coached youth sports and was a devoted father to his three children.

As a mentor, Willis brought countless individuals into the insurance industry, including friends, family, and colleagues. His legacy lives on through the many professionals he trained and inspired, and through the clients and communities he served with passion and integrity.

Jim Willis passed away in April 2021, but his impact on the Iowa insurance industry and the lives he touched continues to resonate. His induction into the Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame honors a life of service, leadership, and unwavering dedication.
