Dean Wade Mitchell, age 94, died on Monday December 12, 2011 at Calvin Community. Dean was born May 22, 1917 in Woodward, Iowa and spent most of his life in the Des Moines area. He was a retired CEO of Farm Bureau Insurance Companies. After receiving his Law Degree from Drake University in 1940 he practiced law for one year prior to entering the insurance industry. He remained a member of the American, Iowa and Polk County Bar Associations. He earned his Chartered Life Underwriter designation in 1964. Dean was past president of the Iowa Insurance Institute and the Federation Insurance Counsel, which named him “Man of the Year” in 1976. He has served as chairman of the National Association of Independent Insurers and was inducted into The Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame in 1998.
Ted Lussem
The Burkhalter Award is presented at I-Day to a person who has made significant contributions to the community and the Iowa insurance industry. The Burkhalter Award is designed to recognize individuals who have influenced the Iowa property and casualty insurance industry and their community through civic involvement. The 2011 recipient is Theodore “Ted’ Lussem, CPCU, AIM, AU, AAI, AIC, ALCM, APA, ARM, ARP, AIAF, AMIM, AAM, ARe, AIS, API, AFSB, ASLI, CPIM.
Ted is known as Mr. CPCU in Iowa and beyond. He was president of the Iowa chapter in 1979-1980. Over the years he has organized and facilitated numerous programs from the American Institute for Chartered Property Casualty Underwriters and is responsible for many insurance professionals’ career success. Paul A. Siedenburg died October 13, 2011 at home. He joined the Iowa Farm Bureau Insurance Companies in 1949 and began his climb up the organizational ladder. In 1970, he was appointed Vice President-Marketing for the Company’s multistate operation and held that position until his retirement in 1985. During that time he did extensive speaking to groups in the insurance industry and served on the Life Insurance Marketing Research Association’s, (LIMRA), Board of Directors. In recognition of his success with his company and his work in the industry he was inducted into the Iowa Insurance Hall of Fame in 2007.
